Responsibilities:
An Organizer Level 1 (O1) is responsible for providing outreach to the broader communities in which the Center is active. O1s are charged with recruiting community participation in on-going Center programs, activities and campaigns. O1s initiate the process of developing relationships between the organization and community members. O1s will develop and implement plans for community outreach that: identify target areas, determine communication and materials needs; and achieve recruitment goals. The majority of O1 time should be spent in the field and with an emphasis on developing the organization’s potential membership base (i.e. new membership). This is carried out through implementation of community outreach through door-knocking and canvassing, phone-banking, follow-up, membership meetings and activities.
Experience:
No prior community/labor experience is required, although preferred. Candidates must be self-motivating, take initiative, and follow instructions well. Strong communications skills are important, especially inter-personal communication. The ability to work well as part of a team is critical. Proficiency with word-processing, World Wide Web and e-mail are preferred but not required.

Responsabilidades:
Organizador Nivel 1 (O1) será responsable de hacer alcance y establecer contactos en las comunidades en donde el Centro es activo.El/la O1 está a cargo de reclutar la participación de la comunidad en los programas, actividades y campañas del Centro de Trabajadores de Miami. El/la O1 estarán a cargo de desarrollar relaciones entre la organización y miembros de la comunidad. El/la O1 desarrollarán e implementarán planes para hacer alcance comunitario en base a: identificación de áreas para alcance, determinación de necesidades en comunicaciones y materiales y establecimiento de metas de reclutamiento. La mayor parte del tiempo del O1 deberá ser utilizado en trabajo de campo, con énfasis en el desarrollo de la potencial membrecía del centro, (nuevos miembros). Esto se logrará a través de trabajo puerta a puerta, alcance y promoción, llamadas telefónicas, seguimiento, reuniones y demás actividades.
Experiencia:
Es preferible, pero no necesario tener experiencia previa como organizador/a comunitario/a o sindical.
Los aplicantes deben ser personas con motivación personal, tener iniciativa y capacidad de seguir instrucciones apropiadamente. Fuerte habilidad de comunicación es muy importante, especialmente comunicación interpersonal. La habilidad de trabajar como parte de un equipo es fundamental para la posición. Es necesario tener conocimientos de procesador de palabras. Conocimiento sobre el manejo del internet y correo electrónico es necesario pero no requerido.

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND
The Miami Workers Center is a strategy and action center building the collective strength of low-income people of color most affected by the social issues of our time: poverty, racism, and gender oppression. Our organizing model emphasizes building a broad and deep base among our constituencies; developing grassroots leadership; shifting the public debate around issues impacting our communities; and building alliances that enable us to amplify our power and message. The vision of the Miami Workers Center is to create a progressive political and social environment in South Florida that allows for the full growth and development of low-income communities of color. This is a community based organization that highly values team leadership, staff development and member involvement.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
The Organizing and Training Director serves on the leadership team and reports to the Executive Director. Key responsibilities are:
* Ensuring the cohesion and consistency of the Miami Workers Center’s organizing model and community organizing programs in diverse communities of South Florida
* Guiding the development of staff and member skills and capacity to be effective organizers and community leaders.
1. Program Development and Coordination (approximately 50% FTE)
a. Lead organizing team in setting goals and planning community campaigns. Coordinate different programs and projects in each of the community/neighborhoods that the Center is active
b. Ensure implementation of quantitative objectives in membership recruitment and member development. Track and support multiple programs and trouble shoot.
c. Supervise and mentor 4-6 organizers, interns and program support staff. Monitor balance of workload to existing capacity and resources.
d. Lead program evaluation and development of new programs/campaigns.
e. Field outside requests for the Center to support organizations’ programs.
2. Organizational Leadership (approximately 25% FTE)
a. Develop and maintain effective relationships with grassroots councils, allied groups, funding sources, community leaders, and public officials.
b. Work with communications staff, organizers and members to develop coherent public/community relations and build community visibility. Represent the Center in forums, public meetings, and community coalitions.
c. Ensure organizing team meets its fundraising goals through grassroots donor outreach and community events. Assist grant fundraising by participating in funder meetings and writing program reports.
d. Lead mid-year and annual staff retreats, including sharing in the development of the agenda and leading the meetings.
e. Participate in board development by attending board meetings, leading the board/staff program committee, and reporting on program updates.
3. Staff training and member development (approximately 25% FTE)
a. Design and implement organization-wide skills development program to sharpen strategic analysis, deepen political education, and develop specific skills relevant to organizing and campaign goals.
b. Guide qualitative leadership development with member-leaders of each MWC’s grassroots organizations and the MWC organizing staff.
c. Coordinate training series – identify needs, develop workshops, conduct training or find trainers, and document curriculum.
d. Coach organizers in areas of their own skills development, time management, developing community members and problem solving.
e. Model good practices to address dynamics of race, class and gender.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Experience: The ideal candidate will share a commitment to the organization's mission and have at least 5 years experience in community organizing and training, including supervision experience. Understanding of adult learning processes and experience providing formal training and on-the-job mentoring.
Leadership Ability: Self-motivation, taking initiative, and ability to manage multiple projects are critical. This position is one of motivating, mentoring and supporting others to develop their own skills and leadership. Ability to work well as part of a team and contribute to our diverse, community-based organization. Management/supervisory experience is preferable.
Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds and foster productive relationships in a multi-cultural context. Understanding and awareness of race, class, and gender issues and. Skill in negotiating, exchanging ideas, opinions, and conflict resolution to formulate common vision and work together effectively.
Other skills: Proficiency with word-processing, data base and e-mail important. The candidate must be detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines. Fluency in English is required, and capacity in Spanish or Creole is beneficial.
